From the beautiful rocky landscape, over the picturesque vineyards and olive groves, to the hidden coves and lovely towns overflowing with history and culture, it is difficult to decide where to go first when you visit the island of Krk. The historical centre of the town of Krk is just a small part of all this island has to offer. We\u2019d like to introduce you to some of the many locations that make the island so unforgettable.<\/p>\n
Omi\u0161alj<\/strong><\/p>\n This small town will enchant you with its historical town centre: its rich history goes back all the way to prehistoric times when Illiran tribes settled this area. The parish church of the Ascension especially contributes to the atmosphere of this wonderful town. Its front fa\u00e7ade is decorated with a beautiful rose window, and the modest exterior hides the rich interior decorated with frescoes.<\/p>\n Don\u2019t forget to also visit the Museum of Krk folklore where you can see the national costume, jewellery, and traditional musical instruments from the island of Krk.<\/p>\n Ka\u0161tel Gradec<\/strong><\/p>\n The Frankopan family is an important part of the island\u2019s history, and many fortified towns on Krk (including the town of Krk) are associated with them, including two castles. One of them is the castle of Gradec near the town of Vrbnik. It was built far from the sea, on a path that connected the town of Krk to the rich agricultural area in the eastern part of the island. After the 15th<\/sup> century, when the last count left the island, Gradec was left to its fate and became a ruin. However, today it is becoming a popular trip destination both for the denizens of the island and for their visitors.<\/p>\n Fulfinum<\/strong><\/p>\n If you find yourself in the vicinity of Omi\u0161alj, you should definitely visit the nearby archaeological site of Fulfinum. There you can see the ruins of an ancient Roman city built by the Flavian dynasty for their veterans. The city is located in the hidden cove of Sepen, and it was bult with the complete infrastructure needed for ancient Roman urban living: a forum with a capitol and a basilica, thermae, an aqueduct, and a port with a merchant district. This impressive city collapsed with the Roman Empire, and later on an early Christian religious complex called Mirine was built at the edge of the town.<\/p>\n Ko\u0161ljun<\/strong><\/p>\n Leave Krk for a short while to visit an even smaller island! The little island of Ko\u0161ljun is in the Puntarska draga bay and its area is smaller than one square kilometre. An old Franciscan monastery and an ethnographic museum are all that can fit on Ko\u0161ljun. Due to its natural and cultural landmarks, tourists have been visiting Ko\u0161ljun since the 19th<\/sup> century, and they are continually enchanted by the serene and meditative atmosphere of its architecture and its rich woodland area. During the summer a lot of visitors come to listen to classical music concerts that take place in the monastery atrium.<\/p>\n
