Book fairs are a special treat for all readers and book lovers. Although many fairs are held all year round in Croatia, the two most famous ones are fast approaching, which is what inspired us to give you this short list of book fairs worth visiting.

Interliber

This famous international book fair has been held at the Zagreb Fair for almost half a century. Many Croatian and international publishers and bookstores take part in the fair every year, and visitors are always especially looking forward to many interesting presentations and talks held by interesting authors. Large numbers of readers and book lovers belonging to many generations gather at Interliber every year, bearing witness to the fair’s popularity and importance. The 44th iteration of Interliber is taking place this year from November 8 to November 11. For more information about the fair, check out this website.

Book Fair(y) in Istria

Book Fair(y) in Istria is the largest author-centred book fair in Croatia. It is held every year in December in Pula and gathers as many as 250 publishers. The fair is international, so every year it hosts writers from various countries. What’s more, every year there is a special theme around which the entire fair is centred. This year, the fair is held from November 25 to December 4, and you can find more information about the programme here.

Mediterranean Book Festival

The Mediterranean Book Festival is a promising new book fair in Split. It’s only been held for five years, but visitors already consider it one of the most important and interesting fairs in the country. It is usually held in May, but for the last couple of years, due to various circumstances, it was held in September. Put this festival in your calendar for next year, and find the details and news about it here.

Zagreb Book Festival

Zagreb Book Festival is usually held in May and gathers many Croatian and international authors on a yearly basis. It is very popular among visitors who especially enjoy panels about current social issues and lectures by esteemed writers, scholars, and experts in various fields. A special feature of this fair are the accompanying music and film events, as well as the particular focus on literature for children. All in all, this is a wonderful festival that offers a wide range of different events where everyone can find something of interest. You should visit the festival on the first chance you get! Find out more about it here.

Festival of World Literature

The Festival of World Literature is not strictly a book fair, but it truly deserves a place on this list due to its significance. It has been held for 10 years, during which it brought many significant Croatian and international authors to Zagreb. The purpose of the festival is to widen the Croatian literary circle and include a larger number of participants in discussions about literature. The carefully planned programmes of this festival attract a large and diverse audience every year, which is the reason we think it’s a must-visit destination for all literature lovers. This year’s festival has already been held, but we are looking forward to seeing what the organisers are preparing for next year. You can find out more details about the festival on this link.
