The bicycle is perhaps the perfect mode of transportation: it doesn’t demand perfect physical fitness from the rider, yet it maintains fitness, while, unlike cars, it doesn’t pollute the environment at all. Moreover, it gives us the opportunity to absorb our surroundings with all our senses and enjoy the world around us. That’s why last month we brought you a selection of two cycling routes in Istria, and in this article, we continue with the selection.

Enchanting Archipelago – Vrsar
The charming coastal town of Vrsar sets the stage for a captivating cycling adventure in the form of the Enchanting Archipelago route. It’s a leisurely route about 20 kilometers long, traversing a combination of asphalt, gravel roads, and forest paths, making a mountain bike recommended.
The route starts from the bus station but soon leads into nature, winding through olive groves, vineyards, and fragrant forests, providing occasional opportunities for breathtaking panoramic views of the azure waters of Lim Bay that will leave you breathless. But besides natural beauty, this route also offers the opportunity to visit a cultural gem—the sculpture park of the renowned Croatian abstract sculptor Dušan Džamonja. All this makes it an essential stop for cycling enthusiasts and lovers of contemporary art alike.

Asparagus Route – Kaštelir
In spring, when the hills of Istria bloom, the Asparagus Route in Kaštelir offers a unique cycling experience centered around one of the most esteemed delicacies of the region—wild asparagus. This gastronomic adventure takes you through rolling hills and green valleys, where you’ll discover secret spots where locals search for this exceptional plant, once considered peasant food but now regarded as a pricey delicacy. As you pedal, keep your eyes peeled for green patches peeking out of the ground—signs of wild asparagus waiting to be picked.
This route is somewhat more demanding as it traverses hilly and forested areas, but in terms of difficulty, it still falls into the easy category. It’s a route in the inland of Istria that doesn’t offer a sea view, but instead provides a beautiful view of the Mirna River valley and picturesque surrounding hills. Moreover, it passes through a paragliding launch site, offering a chance to observe this exceptional adventurous sport (and perhaps participate!).
It’s an ideal route for sports enthusiasts and gourmets, who upon returning from the ride can prepare some traditional asparagus dishes such as risotto or omelets.

Kažuni and Dry Stone Walls – Vodnjan
Another thematically interesting route is the Kažuni and Dry Stone Walls route in Vodnjan, offering a journey through the rich agricultural history of Istria. This cycling route takes you through woodlands, fields, and olive groves, where you’ll come across small stone buildings known as kažuni and dry stone walls, which have been used for centuries by farmers and shepherds. Stop and let yourself be enchanted by these monuments of agriculture and architecture, scattered across the landscape like ancient guardians protecting the fields and vineyards of Istria. Built without mortar, using only dry stone techniques, these structures are a testament to the skills and craftsmanship of past generations. Along the way, you’ll encounter charming villages and old churches, providing insight into the rich cultural heritage of Istria.
This is an easy route about 15 kilometers long, mostly ridden on gravel roads, ideal for lovers of architecture and tradition.

The cycling routes of Istria offer a diverse range of experiences for visitors with different interests. Whether you’re craving adventure, relaxation, or gastronomic delight, in this enchanting corner of Croatia, everyone can find something to enjoy on two wheels.
